Materials processing with a tightly focused femtosecond laser vortex pulse.
In this Letter we present the first (to our knowledge) demonstration of material modification using tightly focused single femtosecond laser vortex pulses. Double-charge femtosecond vortices were synthesized with a polarization-singularity beam converter based on light propagation in a uniaxial anisotropic medium and then focused using moderate- and high-NA optics (viz., NA=0.45 and 0.9) to abl...
متن کاملFemtosecond Laser Processing of Nitinol
The effects of femtosecond laser machining on surface characteristics and subsurface microstructure of a Nitinol alloy were studied. The femtosecond laser machining produced an average surface roughness of 0.2 μm. A re-deposited layer of 7 μm and a hardened layer of 70 μm were also resulted from the machining.
متن کاملSimulation of microscale densification during femtosecond laser processing of dielectric materials
It has been demonstrated that femtosecond laser pulses can be used to process dielectric materials such as optical glass. One of the applications of this process is to produce subdiffraction-limit structures whose index of refraction is different from that of the host medium. Due to the small size of these ‘bits’, it has been proposed to use this technique for high-density optical data storage....
متن کاملThermophysical effects in laser processing of materials with picosecond and femtosecond pulses
Application of picosecond and femtosecond laser pulses to the controlled ablation of materials represents a relatively unexplored yet important topic in laser processing. Such ultrashort pulses are of potential value in areas of thin-film deposition, micromachining, and surgical procedures. We report here some early results of systematic studies being done from the femtosecond to the nanosecond...
متن کاملTechnology developments towards the practical use of femtosecond laser micro-materials processing
We describe several scenarios of basic femtosecond machining and materials processing that should lead to practical applications. Included are results on high through-put deep hole drilling in polymers and glasses in ambient air, and precision high speed micron-scale surface modification of materials.
